Many women approaching their 40’s write to me to ask my opinion about whether or not they should go to Interior Design school. It is an issue I struggled with myself many times over a twenty year period.

I interviewed a number of interior design schools at various points in my past career but never followed through on actually applying. I already had a BA, an MBA and years of experience. The thought of being a full time student for two to four more years with a bunch of kids twenty years younger than me was not very appealing. And the cost was huge considering the significant income I would be giving up over that period.

Over the past five years, I have been approached by a surprising number of interior design graduates that asking me to hire them for my home staging company, Six Elements, Inc. Most seem to be working as sales people in furniture stores and are looking for a way out.

Just this week, a woman called me who was working on 100% commission. I could not image working retail hours for a furniture store after studying interior design for four years and not even be earning a salary. If you are going to work on a commission-only basis, you should absolutely be in your own business. At least then all the sales come to you instead of a hefty percentage going to your employer.

Here is what I have learned over the past five years about being a Professional Home Stager instead of an “Interior designer”:

* As a Home Stager you get many more projects to work on because each project is short-term in nature which translates to much more variety in the job.

* As a Home Stager your clients often give you complete creative control because they understand that they only have to live temporarily with the changes you make to their homes. So, you get to be creative AND make the decisions.

* As a Home Stager you get many referrals for interior redesign and color projects because your staging clients love what you do with the house they are selling and often ask you to work on the new home they are moving into.

* As a Home Stager you have a much larger pool of potential clients to work with because many people who would not normally hire an interior designer or decorator do hire a professional Home Stager when selling their home. As a designer fresh out of interior design school, I know I would not have been able to decorate hundreds of homes in so short a period.

Although I have never attended design school or a design course, the people who hire me never seem to care. They have usually visited my websites, heard about me from their neighbors or real estate agents or have read about Six Elements or Staging Diva in the media. They are not interested in whether or not I can tell them if their chair is Louis the XVI or if I can draw plans to build an addition to their house. They hire me because I am an expert in decorating a house to sell.

Now that I have staged hundreds of homes, I am so happy I followed my instincts and stayed out of Interior Design school, and it was a huge relief to finally let go of the stress I had about the decision. Once I had focused my creative energy and talent on my own Home Staging business, I knew I had made the right choice for me.

Have Seen:
Sweeney Tood - It took a bit to get into it, but I really enjoyed it!
Mr. Magorium - LOVED IT. Natalie Portman was simply adorable in this film and Dustin Hoffman was hilarious.
License to Wed - Not my favorite Mandy Moore film but it was fun. Because I Said So was much better.
Marie Antoinette - It was a fun, fresh spin on the tale but I found it boring in many parts.

Flowers are an integral part of any wedding. From the bride’s bouquet and the decoration at the wedding ceremony to the reception, flowers appear literally everywhere and it would be hard to imagine a wedding without flowers. But how would you feel about having silk wedding flowers?

If you’re anything like me then your first reaction will probably be a definite no! The idea of using artificial flowers at a wedding is simply unthinkable. Well, think again.

I have just returned from a trip to the Far East where I saw some of the most magnificent floral arrangement that I have ever seen – and every single one of them was artificial. I couldn’t believe it when I was told and had to actually touch the flowers to distinguish them from the real thing. Some had even been perfumed so that they actually smelled like the real thing. It was almost unbelievable.

Artificial flowers are nothing new of course and the tradition of making artificial flowers is believed to have started with the Chinese and dates back hundreds of years. Taken up by the Italians in the twelfth century, the art of making flowers from the cocoons of silkworms was developed and was then taken over and perfected by the French. Indeed, history records that in 1775 Marie Antoinette was presented with a silk rosebud and is said to have been so overcome by its perfection that she feinted.

Shortly after this the French Revolution forced many of the French flower makers to flee to England from where the craft was taken to the Americas by English settlers

For many years florists looked down on dried and artificial flowers as being inferior, but this is changing today and many florists now regularly use artificial flowers, and in particular silk flowers, in floral arrangement where they frequently mix both natural and silk flowers together.

Against this background it is easy to see the benefits of silk wedding flowers.

You no longer need to worry about whether or not flowers are in season and bear the expense of flying in out-of-season blooms. Neither do you need to face the mad hectic rush of having an army of people arranging the flowers right up to the minute of the ceremony for fear that they will wilt before the guests arrive.

If you would like to have spring flowers for your wedding in October then that’s fine and if you’d like to fill the church with sunflowers in March that’s equally fine. The possibilities are endless.

And what better keepsake could you have of your special day than some of the flowers from your wedding to help decorate those special events in the future such as your wedding anniversary or the christening of your first child.

The idea of using silk wedding flowers is not quite as crazy as it seems.
