Question: Did Mozart propose to Marie Antoinette as a child?

I’m wondering whether or not Mozart actually proposed to Marie Antoinette because I’ve read things saying yes, and things that say that it’s not true, so is it? (This is a long lost question of mine that’s been in my mind for a while)

Answer: This charming anecdote is often mentioned.

On his 1762 visit to Schonbrunn, the Austrian royal palace, Mozart, playing with the young princesses, slipped on a polished floor. Bursting into tears, he was picked up and comforted by a seven-year-old Marie Antoinette. Mozart then kissed the future queen of France: "You are nice," he declared. "I will marry you."

There is an anecdote concerning her childhood in which a little boy who was visiting the court slipped and fell while playing with the Hapsburg children. Marie Antoinette, who was almost exactly the boy's age, caught him. He kissed her and told her "I'll marry you someday." The boy was Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.

As a child, Marie Antoinette met Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart when he came to perform for Marie Antoinette's Imperial family. Legend has it that after the concert, while Mozart (who was about the same age as Marie Antoinette) was playing with the children, slipped and Marie caught him. Mozart stated "I'll marry you someday."

In the artist's family, they told the story of how the little prodigy had slipped and fallen on the well-polished drawing- room floor, and how Antonia, the youngest of the archduchesses, who was exactly his age, rushed to help him up and kissed him. "You are kind, I would like to marry you," he said to her. "Out of gratitude," he replied to the Empress when she laughed and asked why he wanted to marry her daughter. The anecdote has been told many times, and though it cannot be authenticated, it is perfectly plausible.

French Revolution Aspects

Question: Political aspects of French Revolution?

What were some political aspects during the Great Fear of the French Revolution? For example, what did the king do or not do that sparked the anger of the peasants.

Thanks!

Answer: In the months leading up to the Great Fear and the Reign of Terror, foreign powers had already threatened the French population with retaliation if they did not free King Louis XVI and reinstate him as a monarch.

The Prussian Duke of Brunswick threatened to "pilfer" Paris if the Parisiens dared to touch the royal family, which only infuriated the Parisien population.

The French nobility, having recently lost its inherited privileges, favoured the overthrow of the Revolutionary Government and the reinstatement of the Ancien Régime. The Roman Catholic Church was also against the Revolution, which had turned the clergy into employees of the state and had required that they take an oath of loyalty to the nation. About half of the clergy, mainly in western France, refused the oath.

King Louis XVI was himself was suspected of conspiring with foreign powers who wished to invade France and restore the absolute monarchy. His family's attempted esape to Varennes in 1791 put fear in many French that the King was willing to turn to foreign intervention to crush the Revolution.

Members of the Catholic clergy and the former nobility entered into conspiracies, often invoking foreign military intervention. By the Spring of 1793, Paris was in a full panic. Paranoia and fear was rampant, as foreign spies, traitorous conspiracies, and anti-revolutionary sentiment was feared to be rising and threatening the Revolution.

The paranoia and fear erupted into the Reign of Terror in the Summer of of 1793.

Hope this helps,
Peace!
