Las Vegas Nevada is known for its legendary entertainment. Concert goers can see rare vintage acts like Barry Manilow, Cher, Bette Midler, Tom Jones, Tony Bennett, Wayne Newton and Elton John. They can see Las Vegas shows of famous comedians, such as David Spade, Howie Mandell, Ray Romano, Jerry Seinfeld and Chris Rock. Magic fans can see the best-of-the-best with David Copperfield, Criss Angel, Sigfried & Roy and Penn & Teller. You can play The Price Is Right or walk the deck of the Starship Enterprise on some of Las Vegas’s interactive sets or you can watch people get hypnotized, in both G-rated and X-rated environments. No matter what strikes your fancy, you’ll find a tantalizing Las Vegas show.

Cirque Du Soleil has become synonymous with mystifying contortionists, surrealism-meets-theatre, mysterious music and superior lighting. The Bellagio Hotel is hosting “O,” which is one of the best of all the shows in Las Vegas, blending an “aquatic tapestry of artistry, surrealism and theatrical romance,” as the site explains. The Mirage has The Beatles LOVE performance, which celebrates the music of the Brit-pop band, along with imaginative acrobatic performers tackling mind-bending stunts in colorful costumes.

At New York-New York, Zumanity (18+) blends erotic burlesque with acrobatic fun. Mystere at Treasure Island is probably the most kid-friendly of the Cirque shows, thrilling with high-power acrobatics, inspirational imagery and intriguing theatre. Lastly, KA at the MGM Grand Hotel is the hero’s journey that is bound to impress audiences of all ages. The fall of 2008 will see Criss Angel pair with Cirque Du Soleil for his “Believe” performance, which is one of the best selling shows even though it has yet to open. Don’t forget to get your Las Vegas show tickets!

Vegas hotels offer stupendous theatrical entertainment. The Phantom of the Opera at the Venetian Hotel is hands-down one of the best shows. Even if you’ve seen the movies before or listened to the CDs, there’s just something inspiring and unforgettable about hearing an Andrew Lloyd Weber musical live. No detail was spared in the creation of the Phantom’s $40-million, custom-built Opera House, with its rich red velvet seats and curtains, gold statues and carvings, hand-painted ceilings and Belgium-built mannequins.

While some of the speaking scenes were cut from the 3-hour version, all the songs will be in the 90-minute version. Even if you’ve seen Phantom before, the Las Vegas “Spectacular” version adds extravagant, custom-built backdrops — a new Opera House facade with twinkling lights, an epic computer-controlled chandelier and state-of-the-art Las Vegas Nevada effects. Tickets can cost $100, but it’s worth every penny.

Its shows come in all shapes and sizes, for all interests and age groups. There are, of course, a huge number of adult-themed shows, strip clubs and red light bars in the “city of sin.” Bally’s “Jubilee” is the best 18+ topless show with 1,000 different costumes (albeit skimpy ones), 8,000 miles of sequins and Swarovski crystal plated clothing. Singing, dancing and acrobatics complement this exciting adult show. Zumanity, a Cirque Du Soliel show, blends surreal fantasy and eroticism in a titillating way, making it one of the most popular selling performances in the city Las Vegas.

Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette succeeded to a shamed throne. Out of sympathy with a licentious Court, they played child-like on the edge of a volcano. Financial difficulties pressed sorely and ministers were unable to hold their appointments long enough to bring much relief.

The people were terribly oppressed. While revolution smoldered, the Queen played dairy maid at the Petit Trianon at Versailles, and the King listened to bad advice from every courtier who could gain his ear. The Petit Trianon, a small palace near the vast edifice in the park at Versailles was erected by the architect Gabriel during the latter part of the reign of Louis XV.

For this reason the interior shows some of the elements of design that were typical of his reign, but the building has been so closely connected historically with the ill-fated Marie Antoinette and shows so many of the decorative features of her reign that it is generally considered a specimen of Louis XVI art.

The simple personal tastes of the monarchs accepted, but did not create the clear cut change in decorative styles already begun during the previous reign. The discovery of the buried cities of

Herculaneum and Pompeii brought classic forms again into favor, and the Neo-Classic or new classic styles pervaded both France and England and reached America no less surely.

France added charming studies from nature to Classic influences, introducing the pastoral element to please the Court. Rooms were symmetrical with classic pilasters framing the doorways which had flat or arched openings or were square-headed with bullnose corner blocks. Walls were plain wood with rectangular panels, painted in light tones of gray, green, old rose, blue and cream, white and gold; or paneled in silk brocades, reps, printed linens or wall-paper.

The most characteristic difference with the work of the preceding reign was the complete elimination of the irregular curved lines and the substitution of straight lines for all purposes. Where curves were used, they were the simple curves, portions of circles or oval shapes.

Ornament both painted and carved was on a small scale, disposed symmetrically and was particularly naturalistic in form as compared to a tendency to conventional movement under Louis XV. Roses, daisies, and other flower forms were arranged in garlands and festoons tied with ribbons.

Grisaille work (paintings in imitation of bas-relief carvings) became popular as over-door decorations and stone fireplace designs. Mirrors and paintings were well spaced on paneled walls. Floors were composed of contrasting colored woods in parquet patterns or tiled marble; ceilings were flat, occasionally vaulted and often exquisitely painted; a continuous cornice dividing wall from ceiling.

The furniture was again rectilinear but much lighter than the previous types with delicately carved classical ornament, enameled, gilded, and seldom left in the natural wood; upholstered in the light colored brocades of the period or in fine Beauvais or Aubusson tapestry designed by artists like Boucher and Watteau, or caned.

The artist David dictated the styles. Reisener was among the designers of the most notable cabinet work. The greatest charm that the Louis XVI period conveys to the modern mind is its informality and intimacy created by small rooms, light and delicate details, and pastel coloring.

French Revolution Changes

French Revolution Changes
French Revolution Changes

The Bastille, formally known as Bastille Saint-Antoine, was the notorious Parisian prison which is best known for the ’storming of the Bastille’ which took place on July 14th, 1789 which is now synonymous with the beginning of the French Revolution.

A year later the storming of the Bastille was celebrated by the ‘Fête de la Fédération’ – loosely translated as ‘federation celebrates’. Today France annually celebrates the ‘Fête Nationale’ a national holiday on July 14th. The day is more commonly known outside of France as Bastille Day.

It is commonly asserted that the storming of the Bastille – French for ‘castle’ or ’stronghold’ by the French peasants was solely to release the prisoners, however the Bastille was also used as a store for the French Army’s weapons and as such was an obvious, but less romantic, target.

Today, Bastille Day is marked by a huge military parade on the Champs-Élysées in Paris at which the French President takes the salute. Following the parade, the President traditionally hosts a garden party at his official residence, the Élysée Palace, and then addresses the nation. In the afternoon there is often a political rally at the Place de la Bastille, site of the prison, and in the evening there are a number of organised firework displays. It has to be said that many historians believe that the Storming of the Bastille was more a symbolic act providing a rallying point for the revolution rather than being a real act of defiance of the state. In reality when the Bastille was stormed, there were only a handful of prisoners left in the cells and the Bastille itself was poorly defended by less than 100 soldiers too old for normal service. These ‘invalides’ had been reinforced by 30 grenadiers bringing the total force to just over 100. At the end of July 14, within the Bastille there were a hundred dead protestors and only one defender. The death count of the defenders was to rise once the Bastille had fallen with several soldiers being reported as having been lynched and murdered in the streets. The glorification of the events in Paris of July 14th 1789 is owed primarily to the publication of the work ‘Révolutions de Paris which included many false descriptions of both the actual events and of the number of prisoners actually released.

As we have seen today, Bastille Day is celebrated as any other national holiday that is, as a joyous day of festivities and organised events. Many Parisians organise their own local celebration parties and it’s a great time for people to get together. In the UK, there is some growth in the understanding of what the day symbolises – the British love an underdog and there are some low-key and localised celebrations. We have not seen a great demand for Bastille Party products – as yet – but as summers become warmer this trend may change as Bastille Day offers many opportunities for themed fancy dress parties.
