Question: French and Industrial Revolution?
Hey,
I have to write a 2-3 page essay on this topic:
“During the French Revolution we talked about how change can be beneficial and harmful. How does this relate to the Industrial Revolution? Are we truely better off with mechanization, or did we jus create a completely new slate of problems? Give me pros and cons, and remeber we live in the grey!”
So can any one give me the pros and cons on both revolutions, what they think about the topic, ideas, or websites to help further my resreach.
Your help is greatly apperciated
Thank you,
S.
Answer: First off, I really hope that your teacher didn’t spelly truly “truely” that would be really sad.
OK, so what are the pros and cons of the industrial and the French revolutions:
The French Revolution:
Pros – Any revolution begins because there is a need for change, in the case of the French Revolution, there was unrest because of social system (driven by the monarchie) which was only propelled by famine. So, the pro would be that without the French Revolution, the people would have continued to live in poverty with the Monarchy getting richer, the working class getting poorer and no formation of the middle class.
For the cons:
The French Revolution lasted quite some time, and many people died before it was actually over — heavy casualties were a cost of the ultimate freedom. The problem: when did the freedom actually come? France saw a lot of political and social unrest following the original storming of the Bastille in 1789 – and went through many different governments after that (including the reign of Napolean, the re-instatement of the Monarchy, then a couple of Republics, Napolean III, yada yada yada) resulting in many social issues over the course of the 19th century (up until industrialization).
The Industrial Revolution:
Pros: Everything was easier – the development of certain technology, especially the Steam locomotive (chemin de fer) allowed increased trade throughout different regions in France (or anywhere else I suppose). The middle class emerged and industrial industry provided jobs and higher quality of life for the average citizen.
Cons: As with anything, people weren’t necessarily ready for such changes, and so technology was a bit of a danger for some citizens — dangerous machines, etc. In addition, when one modernizes, they leave part of their cultural history behind for whatever is new, hence the death of classicism in art and literature for Impressionism and realism.
I think the main points are that with any change, you have to give something up. That is the approach that I would take.
Good luck!

Question: Did Rococo women carry around parasols?
I’m making the illustrations for my grandmother’s book and she asked me for a pompous lady, dressed like Marie-Antoinette, carrying a lace parasol. It seems kind of strange, and after checking out a few fashion history books, it seems women in the mid-to-late 18th century wore large-brimmed hats and fans, not parasols…Can anybody correct me?
Answer: Parasols are more of a 1850 -1870 fashion thing… I see them associated with second empire (possibly Bourbon restoration : 1815-1850) pictures rather than pre revolution stuff, and they definitely disappear with the Prussian war of 1870.
