More historical findings showed that it was very unlikely that Marie Antoinette said 'let them eat cake' in response to hearing of starving peasants. It was more likely that Marie Antoinette' s enemies and opponents made up the story later on to tarnish Marie Antoinette' s name even more. However, initially, people did believe that Marie Antoinette did say 'let them eat cake'.

In fact, Marie Antoinette was far from likely to say the phrase 'let them eat cake'. She was discovered to be more soft and sensitive and much more caring to the needs of the people of France than she appeared to be. It was most likely she was too young to understand and know how to handle all the political situations and appeared to be uncaring to the people.
