Although, Marie Antoinette had a luxurious life at the palace, her marriage to Louis XVI was less than perfect. Louis XVI was a homely king who was not so attractive. His passions were for hunting and woodwork in contrast with Marie Antoinette 's passions for arts, dance, fashion, and entertainment. In the early years of their marriage, Louis XVI spent little time with Marie Antoinette. He was a shy person and preferred to admire her from afar. Their marriage went unconsummated for seven years.

Marie Antoinette disregarding her duties

Marie Antoinette has never been known for her concentration and passion to study, she gets bored easily and prefer to play than work. She soon got tired of her duties as the Queen of France. Soon, she let herself escape from her marital frustration and the boring court duties. She began to spend less and less time at court. At the same time, she began surrounding herself with pleasure and expensive gifts.

Marie Antoinette attended many masked balls in Paris. Her life became full of gambling, theatricals and late night promenades in the park.

Marie Antoinette hang out with so many male friends such as the King's frivolous young brother the Count of Artois, and handsome young courtiers the Duc de Ligne, Counts Dillon, Vaudreuil and Axel Fersen. The Queen's indiscretions with her circle of friends led to scandals such as the Diamond Necklace Affair and rumours concerning her relations with that circle including Axel Fersen.
