The modern Treaty of Versailles

The Treaty of Versailles was the peace settlement signed after the first world war which ended in 1918. The treaty of Versailles was signed at the vast Versailles Palace near Paris between Germany and the Allies on June 28th, 1919. The Versailles was chosen to be the venue for the signing of the treaty because of its size.

In the Treaty of Versailles peace settlement Germany was forced to accept sole responsibility for causing World War I.  Since the treaty, two major alliance systems developed due to conflicting national interests which had been evident during the past two decades throughout Europe. These were the “Triple Alliance” of Germany, Austria-Hungary and Italy and the “Triple Entente” of Britain, France and Russia. Russia also pledged to support Serbia in order to prevent further Austrian-Hungarian expansion into the Balkans.
