If so, then please read on. The subject of antiques can be confusing; it has its own language. In this month’s column, I’ll de-mystify some terms commonly used in the business, so that you’ll be appropriately armed for your next antique adventure.

Antique
Basically, an antique is something old that has value because of esthetic or historical reasons. Generally, if a piece is more than 100 years old, it is considered an antique. Although, I have recently heard people use the 50-year mark for Canadian pieces; the rationale being that Canada is a young country relative to places such as Europe and Asia. However, I’m old fashioned and apply the 100-year definition to Canadian pieces.

Original Finish
You’ll often hear an antique dealer mention, in reverential tones, that an item has its original finish. This often precedes the disclosure of a price that exceeds your credit card limit. The term original finish means just that – a piece has the same finish today that it had when it was first made. It’s the original protective coating – the varnish, wax and/or polish that was applied to protect the wood when the piece was produced.

Why does original finish matter?
Original finish is significant because it is one of the factors used to assess the value of a piece. If you have two end tables – one with its original finish and the other without – the one with the original finish is more valuable. As soon as a piece has been stripped of its original finish, it has lost part of its integrity and is, therefore, less valuable.

Original Condition
Just as an original finish adds to the value of a piece, original condition also adds to its value. This refers to the overall state of the piece. Does the piece have the same features that it did when it was produced? Does it still have the original hardware, shelving or drawers?

If the hinges have been removed, new shelving added or the drawer pulls have been replaced, it’s no longer in original condition. As soon as something has been removed or added to a piece, it is less valuable.

Patina
Patina develops over many years. It results from a build up of polish, dirt, grease, wear, and chemical changes. Patina gives a piece its character – its beauty. The small nicks on the corners and gentle wear marks on the surface of a table indicate that a piece has lived a long and useful life. New wood furniture does not have patina because it can only develop over time.

Occasionally, a client will look at piece that just glows with a beautiful patina. He or she’ll say, “I like it but it has a little scratch on the top. Can you fix it?” I’m often inclined to say to them, “You’d have a few scratches on you if you were 150 years old!” So, next time you are shopping, remember that wear is natural with antiques.

Provenance
The word refers to the documented history of a piece. It’s the who, what, when and where of it. It’s what separates the very good from the truly exceptional.

Provenance is a great word to throw around at a cocktail party. It packs a greater punch when it’s said in a highly affected tone. A good use of the word might be, “You just won’t believe the provenance of my new Louis XIV chair that I just received from France. It’s the authentic chair that he sat in while Marie Antoinette told the French peasants to eat cake!”

Yet, true provenance requires painstaking research. Continuing with the Louis XIV chair example, if you can document through bills of sale, letters, photographs, or anything else that your chair is the real one, then you have the provenance. The provenance is what would send the value of this chair sky high. Louis-style chairs are not uncommon. However, a bona fide chair linked to the Sun King is extremely rare. Serious collectors will pay top dollar for items with a well-documented provenance.

Question: Party Themes!?

I need an idea for a party for the sweet 14! I would have it on 10-31 or 11-1. The severity of the skin reactions, she says, vary from person to person or from time to time for the same person, due to the conditions of the skin at the time of exposure to a given concentration of the irritant.

“It is therefore advisable to buy products which are labeled hypo-allergenic or non-comedogenic and do a patch test before using the products on the skin to make sure one is not allergic to it, ” Dr. Panlaqui adds.

Cosmetic ingredients vary. They come from aloe vera, wheat grain products, essential oils and extracts derived from plants. One of the newest are florabeads which are ideal for facial scrub.

Evidence of mechanical exfoliation dates back as 3,000 BC when honey and salt constituted the main cleansing ingredients of the Egyptian religious community. According to data, exfoliation acids have a long history of use like the baths taken by Cleopatra and Marie Antoinette.

Aside from the scrubs, cosmetics and treatment are reputed to beautify and minimize ageing effects. Hair cosmetics strengthen the hair and scalp as well as color it; lipstick makes one look more attractive; powder makes the skin glow and rosy; and fragrance leaves an enchanting scent. Indeed, the growing complexity of today’s market combine make-up and treatment using cosmetics that don’t harm the skin.

What are the precautions to take? Don’t forget the patch test. Keep away from the sun, use an umbrella or a sunblock lotion. Throw away old make-up. Read labels just like you would food and medicine labels.

Dr. Panlaqui also warned about the following cosmetics and its harmful ingredients:

In axilliary deodorants and antiperspirants, aluminum salts like aluminum chloride or zinc slats (e.g. zinc chloride act as a primary irritant. In roll-ons, the quaternary ammonium compounds may produce allergic contact dermatitis.

In hair dyes, those containing PPDA or paraphenylenediamine may act as sensitizer. Hair bleaches peroxide ad ammonia.

In lipsticks, the perfumes used and di- and tetrabomo -fluorescein in the dyes may cause sensitization reactions.

In eye make-up, be wary of preservatives and perfumes.

In sunscreens, keep away from paraaminobenzoicacid and its esters.

In depigmenting creams, beware of those containing hydroquinone.

Well, while cosmetics really makes a whole lot of difference in enhancing a woman’s beauty, there’s still no substitute for a radiant and sincere smile.

The high heel shoes attribute their existence to Catherine of Medici from Paris, who wore it owing to her short stature and became a part of the fashion shortly after. These fashionable shoes enjoy a varied history in men and women.

Initially, men and women both wore high heel shoes for centuries. The lower class walked barefoot and people wearing them were mostly popular figures such as actors. They wore indicating their social status and tried to gain importance. The men heels were primarily worn in the courts. The modern fashion comes from Italian style ranging to 15 to 42 cm. 17th century brought a change stating that women wore high heel shoes to seduce and marry men. Later, Giovanni Casanova also declared his admiration for shoes that showed the beautiful legs of women.

The year 1791 brought a significant revolution when Napoleon banished high heel shoes attempting to illustrate equality. Regardless of Napoleonic code, Marie Antoinette in 1793 appeared wearing shoes of two inches to the scaffold. Once again in 1860s heels gained utmost popularity and the contraption of sewing machine bestowed with great varieties in high heel shoes. In fact, Victorians felt wearing them gave a symbolic curve to every woman. The late 19th century brought widespread popularity, but in 1930s the western shoe with heels received favorable response. In early 1960s, miniskirt came into full form and the stilettos emerged into fashion enhancing the look of legs. Stiletto heels are long and thin varying in lengths from 1 to 2 inch, and are especially for women.

Even the tennis shoes came high heeled. The heelless high heel shoes allowed women to wear all types of shoes. Though, it seemed to be the height of eccentricity, the gesture of having an assortment of fashion choices could not be ignored. Women love wearing shoes matching their outfit and appreciate wrapping their delicate and elegant feet. Especially, the high heel shoes certainly bring compliments as they look empowered and highly confident.

High heel shoes indicate fashionable footwear that raises the feet of the wearer significantly. The footwear creates an aesthetic feeling as a person appears slender and tall. Recently, the shoes heights vary from 4cm (kitten heel) to 10 cm (spike or stilettos). The extreme high heel shoes are available in 13 cm and have aesthetic reasons to be worn. However, they cannot be worn practically everyday.

High heel shoes are popular among women as it adds height to the wearer and give an aesthetic appeal. It is also believed to alter the angle of the foot and also enhances the calves shape.

Answer: you'd be better off googling or wikipedia-ing it, but here are a few tidbits:

you should probably know why the french rev'n happened; 1) the people were starving and dying of sickness and famine and the monarchy did absolutely nothing to help. 2) King Louis financed a bunch of wars bringing france to the edge of bankruptcy on top of everything else

there were two groups during the period that fought on opposite sides during the revolution: the jacobins and the girondins.

i forget exactly which is which but in know that people hung out in salons a lot and discussed the revolution and politics. the girondins tried to get the king to reform. the jacobins were more radical and wanted bloodshed i think.

Royalists were hated by all. royalists were people who were still for the king despite the inefficiency of that monarchy. you know all about the guillotine of course. people looked at it as the "common razor", which was an important idea in a time when people were trying to wrest power from kings and queens in favor of a democracy or republic. the guillotine put all people of all classes on the same level, cuz when they were executed, both noble and commoner were killed the same way and were equal.

also, in the language, i heard from my history teacher (a while ago so i don't remember all of it) you weren't allowed to "vouvoyer" or address someone with respect "vous". it's another way of saying "you" but to someone older or someone you don't know. it was considered a very royalist statement to vouvoyer someone and it came to the point that people were actually assaulted for saying it. you were supposed to address everyone as "tu".
