Question: How was Michael Garoutte cousin to Louis XVI?

In a historical passage, it says that Michael Garoutte was brought before King Louis XVI but dismissed over the normally death penalized charge of dueling because he was Louis’ cousin. However, I’m trying to find the familial tie. Was it that Garoutte was related to Louis himself or Marie Antoinette? Or was there another related way to be cousins?

Answer: Michel's mother was Lady Anne de Lascour, daughter of Baron de Lascour, cousin of Louis' father.

You need to remember than in royal families, "cousin" takes in EVERY degree of cousin, out to the nth cousin to the nth degree.
