Question: Journal on the French Revolution?

I have to write 4 journal entries about being part of the BOURGEOIS class during the French Revolution. It has to take place through out the entire think per say 1 entry per year. They have to be a page long double spaced. They are due tomorrow!! In my class I didn’t talk much about them but more about the peasants revolting etc. I NEED AS MUCH INFORMATION AS I CAN GET TO WRITE THESE JOURNAL ENTRIES!! Please can anyone tell me any sites- general knowledge and important information that I will need to know to do well?

Answer: In the French feudal order pre-revolution, "bourgeois" was a class of citizens who were wealthier members of the Third Estate, but were overtaxed and had none of the privileges which the aristocracy held (however many bourgeois bought their way into nobility; see Venal Office).

Bourgeoisie were defined by conditions such as length of residence and source of income. The word evolved to mean merchants and traders, and until the 19th century was mostly synonymous with the middle class (persons in the broad socioeconomic spectrum between nobility and serfs or proletarians). Then, as the power and wealth of the nobility faded in the second half of the 19th century, the bourgeoisie emerged as the new ruling class.

Question: Will Nicholas Cage play Les in the film version of Les Miserable?

I hear this is a musical comedy that just came out last year about the French revolution. Nichlos Cage will play the lead guy who runs a gulliotine.

Answer: You must be teasing us~aren’t you? There is no “Les”. And, it would be complete idiocy to cast Nicolas Cage anywhere in a production of “Les Miserables”~musical or otherwise.

Confess: You are joking!

Maybe Cage could play some bit part~one of the people being guillotined perhaps.

Question: French and Industrial Revolution?

Hey,
I have to write a 2-3 page essay on this topic:

“During the French Revolution we talked about how change can be beneficial and harmful. How does this relate to the Industrial Revolution? Are we truely better off with mechanization, or did we jus create a completely new slate of problems? Give me pros and cons, and remeber we live in the grey!”

So can any one give me the pros and cons on both revolutions, what they think about the topic, ideas, or websites to help further my resreach.

Your help is greatly apperciated
Thank you,
S.

Answer: First off, I really hope that your teacher didn’t spelly truly “truely” that would be really sad.

OK, so what are the pros and cons of the industrial and the French revolutions:

The French Revolution:
Pros – Any revolution begins because there is a need for change, in the case of the French Revolution, there was unrest because of social system (driven by the monarchie) which was only propelled by famine. So, the pro would be that without the French Revolution, the people would have continued to live in poverty with the Monarchy getting richer, the working class getting poorer and no formation of the middle class.

For the cons:
The French Revolution lasted quite some time, and many people died before it was actually over — heavy casualties were a cost of the ultimate freedom. The problem: when did the freedom actually come? France saw a lot of political and social unrest following the original storming of the Bastille in 1789 – and went through many different governments after that (including the reign of Napolean, the re-instatement of the Monarchy, then a couple of Republics, Napolean III, yada yada yada) resulting in many social issues over the course of the 19th century (up until industrialization).

The Industrial Revolution:

Pros: Everything was easier – the development of certain technology, especially the Steam locomotive (chemin de fer) allowed increased trade throughout different regions in France (or anywhere else I suppose). The middle class emerged and industrial industry provided jobs and higher quality of life for the average citizen.

Cons: As with anything, people weren’t necessarily ready for such changes, and so technology was a bit of a danger for some citizens — dangerous machines, etc. In addition, when one modernizes, they leave part of their cultural history behind for whatever is new, hence the death of classicism in art and literature for Impressionism and realism.

I think the main points are that with any change, you have to give something up. That is the approach that I would take.

Good luck!
